The 35th annual What Car? Car of the Year awards ceremony took place last night at the Grosvenor Hotel, London.

Around 1,500 industry professionals came together to celebrate the achievements of the motoring world.

The awards reflected a good year for the German car market with 10 of the 16 awards going to the likes of Audi, VW and BMW. The overall award for the ‘Car of the Year’ was presented to the Volkswagen up! for its drive, looks and safety features.

What Car? editor-in-chief Chas Hallett said: ‘The Volkswagen Up is the best car we’ve seen this year because it combines refinement, quality, space and economy. It sets new standards for the £10,000 price bracket. It feels at home in town and copes admirably on the motorway; it is the right car for the time.
