E3: Nintendo announce successor to the Wii

Nintendo have announced that the Wii U will be the successor to the Wii at E3 in Los Angeles.

The new console will feature a controller with a  6.2 inch touchscreen that can be used as a stand-alone tablet computer with speakers and microphone.

Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata said: “The new controller means you won’t need to give up your gameplay when someone else wants to come into the room and use the TV.”

“We decided on this new structure for the Wii U because we want to create a strong bond between games, your TV and the Internet. ”

“This device is designed to appeal to all players”

The controller will also be able to be used as a web camera so that users can participate in video calls with friends.

Mr Iwata announced that some of the games to be available of release of the Wii U will include Lego City Stories, Assassin’s Creed, Tekken, Alien Colonial Marines, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Ghost Recon. He also mentioned that the Smash Bros franchise will appear on the console.

The announcement also included news of five new 3DS games including a new Mario Kart, Starfox, Super Mario, Kid Icarus and Luigi’s Mansion 2.

The official design for the Wii U console has not been released yet, could this be it?
