EA released its new online store today, Origin, a ‘direct-to-consumer gaming platform’ which is set to rival Steam.

The service, which already features 150 games, will be able to provide users with exclusive access to some of the biggest EA names, including FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3.

Spokesman for EA, John Reseburg explained that the news service will provide a place where ‘gamers can go to find, purchase and download all the best content from EA.’

He stated: “In the months ahead, Origin will be the place to purchase and download exclusive limited edition copies of highly anticipated EA games.”

The service will go head to head with the already well-established Steam, which currently boasts around 3,000,000 users at peak times.

CEO at EA, John Riccitiello said: “Over time, Origin will grow with new functionality and unique new content that consumers can’t get anywhere else.”

“We’re committed to offering consumers direct access to great content and community in a way they have never experienced before.”

The launch of the new service will provide more functionality to the company’s already huge online presence. So far EA has around 100 million registered players in 75 countries.

Senior vice president of Global Online at EA, David DeMartini said: “From exclusive demos to full-game downloads, Origin is the place consumers will go for the best game experiences.”
