Something new has crash-landed into the UK smartphone market and quite frankly it’s a god send.

For those of you like myself who were suddenly hit by the LiveProfile phenomena, and have no clue as to what it is, let me tell you a little about it. Some say it’s BlackBerry Messenger with a hint of Facebook; but to put it simply it’s an instant chat app with soon to be released social networking features and best of all, it’s completely free.

As a result it managed to sign up 300,000 new users in 24 hours last week. At present around 50,000 people downloaded the app every hour on the 28th April. That’s more than the last social phenomena, Twitter.

LiveProfile Co-founder and CEO Phil Karl said: “We’ve been experiencing explosive growth, primarily from people sharing the app with friends,
and we expect this trend to continue”

Another reason for the ‘explosive growth’ could be the fact that on the 25th March LiveProfile was released on BlackBerry, finally providing a cross-platform instant messenger for the major phone brands.

Karl said: “LiveProfile breaks through one of the final remaining barriers to fast, reliable, and socially enabled communication between mobile devices of all types.”

Before the release of the app if you had a BlackBerry then BBM was great, especially if you didn’t have any unlimited texts. And well for the iPhone and the HTC the best IM app was ‘Whatsapp’, which in my opinion, was pants. Although it too has been experiencing greater interest from the public.

Now this new mobile-only program gives you a profile with your personal information so friends can find you, not only through their contacts but also through their Facebook as well. Now the ability to look up people using this new service through you contacts is a great idea and one that should have been used a while back. It saves time trying to play around with pin numbers, or scanning barcodes. It is a simple click to add and your done.

The ability to upload photos as well and having a status makes it very similar to BBM and Windows Live Messenger. There is something different about this one though and perhaps it was down to a simple idea of a new product filling a gap in the market.
