Nintendo announce successor for the ageing Wii

Nintendo announced today the 2012 release of a new console after publishing details about their 66% decline in annual income.

The decline has been attributed to the ageing Wii which has been struggling to compete with its main rivals, the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

A press release (Translated from Japanese) on the Nintendo website said: “The sales of the machine did not achieve what was expected in the March period.”

On top of this the new Nintendo 3DS has failed to hit sales expectations, falling short of the 4 million estimate by around 400,00 units.

The new console, dubbed by some as the ‘Wii 2’, is to be unveiled at E3 in June this year.
